How do I remove bad odors from my sneakers?

A bad smell in sneakers usually occurs because the shoes have been moist or muggy and have not been allowed to dry quickly enough. It can also occur if you do not use socks in your sneakers to transport and absorb sweat from your feet. It can be a bad combination and very difficult to remove the smell 100%, but with the right products and methods it can be done.

Start by cleaning your sneakers thoroughly both outside and inside. Also take out the sole and clean the underside if this can be done. Make sure the sneakers are completely dry within a maximum of eight hours after cleaning, otherwise new odor nuisances in the form of mold may arise. Then spray the inside and the insole with KarlsKicks shoe deodorant. The product has been developed to remove bad odors and kill bacteria, so it is not just a scent freshener! After an effective cleaning and removal of mould and bacteria, you can advantageously put fragrance balls in your sneakers. This keeps them fresh and fragrant for a long time!

How do I prepare my sneakers before painting them?

Before you paint your sneakers, for a custom or restore project, it is important that the leather is prepared, cleaned and the surface treatment removed. This applies to us if your sneakers are brand new!

It is crucial for the durability of your work that you clean the leather with Acetone or our sneaker preparer primer cleaner on a cotton pad! If you don't do this, the paint won't last. It will quickly peel off and the result will not be satisfactory.

Be careful with use if the leather on your sneakers is painted - paint on the leather will dissolve and details may be lost. If you are in doubt, come by the store for our recommendation or help.

How do you remove marks and discoloration on the sole that cannot be removed by cleaning?

Here, acetone is your best friend for removing tough marks and stains on plastic, rubber, and leather. But be careful! Acetone easily removes color and, in a few cases, can damage the material of your sneakers. So, try your hand carefully before going all in with this chemical. Acetone can be bought cheaply in a materialist or a hardware store.

How do I avoid creases?

Shoe wood is the best product you can use against creases and folds in your sneakers. If you want extra protection, you can advantageously use sneaker shields, which also go by the name crease protectors. However, crease protectors do not fully replace shoe wood. We would therefore recommend that you buy a set of shoe trees together with a set of sneaker shields for optimal protection of your favorite sneakers.

Can I get my sneakers in the washing machine?

Fabric sneakers can in most cases be washed in the washing machine with good results. Sneakers in other materials can also be washed in the machine, but here you must be more careful as it can damage your sneakers.

Remember to remove the soles and laces in beforehand and wash those and your sneakers together with a pair of towels in the same color to avoid damage when the washing machine spins, alternatively put them in a separate washing bag.

Use a smaller amount of detergent than usual and only wash your sneakers at max. 30 degrees. Higher temperatures can damage the materials and there can be a danger that the glue for the sole will dissolve.

Never dry them in the dryer! But make sure your shoes dry as soon as possible afterwards. They should preferably be crisp dry before a maximum of eight hours has passed to avoid any unpleasant odors. Once your sneakers have been soiled and smelly, it can be difficult to get rid of them again.

When your sneakers are washed, it is extra important to protect them, as they are otherwise very exposed. Buy our Nano Protector for optimal protection of the surface of your sneakers here: https://karlskicks.com/products/nano-protector?variant=16284562631
